Intro to Vassar GIS Resources for Social Science Mapping
October 4, 2023, 3:30-5:00 PM, Ely Hall Rm 114 (GIS Lab)
Powerful GIS tools for social science mapping are available to all students, faculty, and academic staff at Vassar. This workshop will provide an introduction to two of these tools through practical exercises. First, we'll use Social Explorer, an online social science mapping platform, to map demographic and socioeconomic patterns using Census and American Community Survey (ACS) data. Then, we'll obtain and map ACS data in ArcGIS Pro, an industry standard desktop Geographic Information Systems (GIS) program, and use it to explore the relationship between recent housing data and historically redlined neighborhoods in Poughkeepsie.
