Dance

This course explores the evolution of dance in the United States from the 18th century to the present day. By placing the art form in a historical context, students develop a deeper understanding of both dance and influential choreographers. We look at the many ways that art influences and is affected by cultural and political change. Conversations around race, gender, appreciation, and appropriation ask students to think critically and observe keenly.

Historical research and academic inquiry lead to experiential dance practice, thus connecting history to the body. This also enables each participant to explore and discover their personal dance lineage. Research, readings, videos, discussions, writing, and creative dance projects make up the required work for this course.
