This course critically examines the democratic institutions of countries in Africa through the lens of class and ethnicity. We explore Africa’s unique experience with democratization and discuss how the politics of class and ethnicity is related to conflict, social movements, civil society organizations, elite politics, democratic backsliding, and economic development or underdevelopment. Country case studies include but are not limited to: Nigeria, Tanzania, Sudan, and Uganda.
